Our overall goal is to facilitate in changing the mindsets of the public, specifically the youth. Instead of leaving a better earth for our children, we need to leave better children for our earth. We are committed to working locally to improve the quality of our oceans and waterways, making them safer for the creatures that inhabit them as well as for the community, thereby contributing towards a sustainable future.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Durban Beach Cleanup was started in June 2011 by Nicole Brauteseth and Ingrid Butcher who wanted to get a group of friends together for a once-off cleanup. From the immensely positive response via social media, they decided to hold beach cleanups on a monthly basis.
Tuffy Brands and Island Tribe came on board as sponsors shortly after. In 2012 Quiksilver, Wasteman, Gig Network Solutions, East Coast Radio and Umlilo brands also joined the cause.
The initiative has grown substantially since its inception. We have now upgraded to KZN Beach Cleanup, increasing our scope to include beaches both North and South of Durban, as well as local estuaries and waterways.
